Fluent Disc Sport: Tackling Disc Golf’s Barriers to Growth
Fluent Disc Sport Inc., founded in 2020 by Kevin Farley, has become one of Canada’s leaders in disc golf course design and innovation. Known for championship-level projects like Wolf Tracks @ Bondi and for introducing Experiential Course Design, Fluent is now addressing the sport’s three biggest barriers to growth:
Footprint: Traditional disc golf courses require large tracts of land. Discovery Zones solve this by fitting into smaller, often underutilized spaces while still delivering an authentic experience.
Approachability: Many players are only introduced to disc golf through friends or existing players. Discovery Zones feature intuitive signage, instructional content, and skills-based layouts, making the sport easier for newcomers to try on their own.
Accessibility: Disc golf has historically been tucked away in forests or remote areas. Discovery Zones bring the game into community spaces, closer to where people live, making it more inclusive and accessible to all ages and abilities.
The first Discovery Zone launched in Stouffville, Ontario in August 2024, with a second opening this fall in Washago, Ontario. A full slate of installations is planned for 2026, stretching across Ontario, New Brunswick, and the company’s first U.S. site in North Carolina.
Fluent’s progress has been supported by the Step Forward Entrepreneurs Program through iion. The funding allowed the company to:
Secure demo equipment to refine the Discovery Zone concept.
Showcase its vision at the Parks and Recreation Ontario (PRO) tradeshow, connecting with thousands of municipal leaders.
Invest in new marketing assets, brochures, and trademark protections
Beyond breaking barriers for the sport, the Discovery Zone product line has been transformative for Fluent Disc Sport’s business. Unlike custom course builds, Discovery Zones are repeatable, standardized, and simple for clients to install. This scalability frees Kevin Farley from being the bottleneck in company growth, allowing him to continue serving major international clients on championship-level destination courses while the business expands.
The knock-on effects have been significant. Higher volumes of equipment orders have reduced costs, helping Fluent launch Canada’s first disc golf basket manufacturing line — the Fluent Borealis. Discovery Zones have also proven to be a valuable bolt-on for larger projects, raising average sale values and providing even more value for clients.
Kevin Farley reflects, “This expansion was the catalyst we needed. It’s given us the ability not just to keep working, but to reinvest in growth. Step Forward funding played a key role in helping us get there, and now we’re building momentum that will carry Fluent into the next stage of our journey.”
